Italian immigrants brought the Feast of Seven Fishes, a Christmas Eve culinary tradition in Italy, to America, where it became part of the menu on restaurants that celebrated the fish and shellfish made classic by the Feast. Many Italians love seafood at Christmas. On Christmas Eve, it's common that no meat (and also sometimes no dairy) is eaten. Often a light seafood meal is eaten and then people go to the Midnight Mass service.
The types of fish and how they are served vary between different regions in Italy. But it’s this tradition in particular - which became known as “The Feast of the Seven Fishes” - that bridged eating seafood at the holidays into American culture.
This holiday, you can craft your own amazing Feast of Seven Fishes at home with our exclusive Feast of Seven Fishes pack:
Fresh Arctic Char: For those who find salmon a bit too strong in flavor - and trout a bit too mild - the Arctic Char is a fish not to be missed. Farm-raised in the icy waters off of Iceland, the char is a member of the salmon family. Its distinct yet mild flavor is unique, yet its firmer texture offers a flake that’s finer than salmon or trout.
Fresh Maine Mussels: Harvested daily from clean Atlantic waters by fisherman with a passion for gathering the finest mussels. Simply steamed to perfection with nothing added, or steeped in a white wine, stock, and garlic reduction, their light, brinily musky, ethereal ocean flavor with a slight opposing chewiness is sometimes referred to as the nectar of the gods.
Fresh New England Scallops: Sweet, with a hint of the sea. Our fresh scallops are plush, meaty and "dry packed" (never treated with preservatives) which make for superior flavor and texture. What’s more, our New England Scallops are a generous 16-20 (meaning there are approximately 10 to 20 scallops per pound).
Sweet Maine Lobster Tails (4-5 oz.): A customer-favorite year after year. If you’re seeking the sweetest Maine Lobster Tails on the market, look no further than our succulent 4-5 ouncers. These tails come from smaller “sweet” lobsters, and the 4-5 oz. portion is a perfect size for so many recipes! Flash-frozen straight out of the sea to lock in that ocean-fresh flavor.
Juicy Maine Jonah Crab Claws: Landed fresh year-round, and harvested inshore and offshore by lobster boats. Jonah Crab Meat is rich, flakey, sweet, and often compared to the flavor of its Pacific cousin, the Dungeness. Flash-frozen straight out of the sea to lock in that ocean-fresh flavor.
Savory Maine Crab Cakes: We use locally-sourced ingredients, including generous portions of our fresh minced Maine Jonah Crab Meat when creating these delectable crab cakes. No flavor disguises, just pure, sweet and savory flavor in every bite. Arrives ready to thaw, cook and enjoy.
Tiger Shrimp: Plump and juicy, our Tiger Shrimp will make your shrimp cocktail or other favorite holiday appetizer recipe extra impressive. Flash-frozen. Arrives ready to thaw, cook and enjoy.
